The long-awaited hearing of 26,000 pending job cancellation cases in the Supreme Court was once again postponed due to a lack of time. On Wednesday, the case was scheduled to be heard before the division bench of Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice J.B. Pardiwala. However, the proceedings could not continue as planned, leaving the affected parties disappointed and waiting for another chance to be heard. The next hearing will now take place on March 24, 2025.
The case involves 26,000 teachers and education workers who have been protesting for months against job cancellations. The protesters, who are primarily from the education sector, are continuing their demonstration on the Y Channel in Dharmatala, Kolkata, calling for justice. They have been vocal about their plight, but despite their ongoing efforts, the Supreme Court hearing has been delayed multiple times.
On January 7, 2025, the Supreme Court had initially set the date for the hearing, but at that time, the Court also instructed all parties to file an affidavit by January 15. However, due to changes in the bench composition, the hearing was not possible on that day. Despite the anticipation for progress, the protesters were left disheartened when the case was postponed yet again.
During Wednesday’s session, the Supreme Court indicated that there would not be enough time to conduct the full hearing of the case. Lawyers for the affected parties requested the judges to hear a few arguments, and the judges agreed to listen to some of the lawyers’ pleas. However, they ultimately decided that the case would have to be postponed to the next hearing in March.
The delay in the hearing has led to growing frustration among the protesting teachers and education workers. They are increasingly concerned that their voices will not be heard in a timely manner, and they continue their protest in Dharmatala as they await a resolution to their issues.
For now, the protesters remain steadfast, demanding that their job cancellations be addressed and rectified. With the next hearing scheduled for March, they are left in uncertainty as they await the Court’s decision on the matter.
